On June’1, at the D9 Conference, microsoft demonstrated the next generation of Windows, internally code-named “Windows 8,” for the first time. Windows 8 is a reimagining of Windows, from the chip to the interface. A Windows 8-based PC is really a new kind of device, one that scales from touch-only small screens through to large screens, with or without a keyboard and mouse.

The demo showed some of the ways microsoft have been reimagined the interface for a new generation of touch-centric hardware. Fast, fluid and dynamic, the experience has been transformed while keeping the power, flexibility and connectivity of Windows intact.

Here are a few aspects of the new interface microsoft showed today:

•
Fast launching of apps from a tile-based Start screen, which replaces the Windows Start menu with a customizable, scalable full-screen view of apps.
•
Live tiles with notifications, showing always up-to-date information from your apps.
•
Fluid, natural switching between running apps.
•
Convenient ability to snap and resize an app to the side of the screen, so you can really multitask using the capabilities of Windows.
•
Web-connected and Web-powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript that have access to the full power of the PC.
•
Fully touch-optimized browsing, with all the power of hardware-accelerated Internet Explorer 10.

If you miss the Quick Launch Toolbar from Windows XP/Vista you can have it back in Windows 7
Few quick steps, and you will have it back…

Right click the taskbar, go to Toolbar -> New Toolbar and type “%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch” into the folder box, then click Select Folder.

To make it look like it would in Windows Vista, right click the taskbar, uncheck “Lock the Taskbar”, then right click the divider and uncheck “Show Title” and “Show Text”. Then right click the taskbar and check “Show Small Icons” and you should be done.

Most new Mac switchers fired complaints on the strange behavior of green ‘maximize’ button that fails to maximize window to full screen. If you’re one of them, it’s time to rest assured and check out this nifty little freeware: Right Zoom.

“This free tool fixes an inconvenient behavior of green Zoom button in Mac OS X. It will always expand windows on a full screen instead of strange resizing”, explained its developer, Blazing Tools Software.

The installation of this application is pretty straightforward: only unzipping and double-clicking are needed. However, as this application is running on background, you need to stop it by executing Terminal command: killall RightZoom

Besides helping Internet users to search for useful information online, Google also provides search for specific Mac sites to assist Mac users in gathering more Mac related information.

As far as I know, there are two ways to perform search on specific Mac sites.

Adding Prefix to Search Keyword

By prefixing ‘Mac’ to your keyword search, there is a high chance to get returned results related to Mac. For example, to search for useful Mac keyboard shortcuts, you can use this search keyword: ‘Mac Keyboard Shortcut’.

Searching with Google for Mac

To narrow down your scope on Mac specific sites, you can always use Google for Mac. Inside this page, you will see the search button labeled as ‘Search Mac Sites’ instead of usual ‘Google Search’.

However, I believe some of us may want to incorporate this Mac specific search with Safari search box. The rest of this article will explain this.

Incorporating with Safari Search Box

It’s quite tedious to incorporate this Mac specific Google search to your Safari web browser, as you will need to install additional Safari plug-in called Inquisitor.

Here are the steps required.

Download and install Safari Plug-in: Inquisitor

Open Safari Preferences Pane (Menu Bar: Safari > Preferences)

Go to Inquisitor Preferences Pane (More Toolbox: Search)

Add additional search engines by clicking on Edit Sites button (as shown in screenshot: the highlighted button)

mac sites google search

Insert following information to provide Google Specific Mac Search

Site Name: Google for Mac

URL:
http://www.google.com/search?q=%@&btnmeta%3Dsearch%3Dmac=Search+Mac+Sites&language-switcher=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fmac%2F

Shortcut: Shift-Return

Finally, after inserting search keyword and pressing shift-return, you will be redirected to results page of Mac specific site

Perhaps, you’ve another way to search for specific Mac sites, comment box is always there to let you throw your ideas inside.
